Check-in Limits

When travelling with us on a domestic flight on an everyday low Blue Saver or GO! Fare you can choose to travel with carry-on baggage only, or take checked baggage for a small fee.  For these fare types you may purchase a checked baggage allowance online now of up to 23kgs before you arrive at the airport for only $10 per flight. If the checked baggage allowance is not pre-purchased prior to arriving at the airport, a $20 fee for up to 23 kg will apply at the airport.

Baggage Fee exemptions:

You are exempt from the above fees if you are:
  • a Velocity Gold or Silver Member
  • travelling on a Flexible, Corporate Plus or Premium Economy Fare.

* Note: Guests are not required to purchase the checked baggage allowance for flights operated by Skywest Airlines.

General Baggage Guidelines:

  • Each Guest travelling on our everyday low Blue Saver or GO! fares will have the option of purchasing a checked baggage allowance of up to 23kg for $10 per flight when making their booking.
  • If you are travelling on a Blue Saver or GO! fare, and do not pre-purchase checked baggage prior to arriving at the airport, then a fee of $20 will apply at the airport for any checked baggage up to 23kg.
  • Flexible fare holders and Velocity Silver members may check in up to 23kg of baggage free
  • Corporate Plus, Premium Economy fare holders and Velocity Gold Members may check in up to 32kg of baggage free. If possible, when you bring between 23kg to 32kg of checked baggage please split the weight  over several bags to prevent injury to our Ground Staff. 
  • Each piece of your baggage must not weigh more than 32 kg and must not exceed a total linear dimension of 140 cm (add together depth, width and length)
  • Checked baggage that exceeds 23 kgs (or 32 kgs for Corporate Plus,  Premium Economy fare holders and Velocity Gold Members) will attract excess baggage charges and will only be accepted at our discretion.
  • If the baggage you intend to take with you on your flight is heavier or larger than the limits outlined above, please refer to the Excess Baggage and/or Oversized Baggage section

Carry-on Baggage

What’s allowed

You may take, free of charge, baggage weighing up to 7 kg on board with you, which might consist of:

  • 1 piece not exceeding dimensions of 23 cm in depth, 34 cm in height and 48 cm in length, (total linear dimensions equal to 105cm), and;
  • 1 suit pack or garment bag, non rigid/unfolded not exceeding 11cm in depth x 60cm in width x 114cm in length (total linear dimensions equal to 185 cm), or another small bag or briefcase

In addition these items are allowed

  • Laptop computer, a handbag, pocketbook or purse
  • An overcoat, wrap or blanket
  • A small camera or pair of binoculars
  • Infants’ food for consumption in flight
  • A pair of crutches or prosthetic devices for your use, provided that you are dependant on them for mobility
  • An umbrella with/without metal point, or walking stick*
  • Pointed metal nail files (including nail clippers)*
  • Knitting and crochet needles*
  • Corkscrews; and*
  • Racquets used in squash, tennis, badminton or any other sport*

* This is applicable only to Australian departure ports

Note: If you are travelling with an infant you may carry on an extra bag containing articles for use in the cabin such as nappies or baby food. Check out our infants baggage limits.

Note: A maximum of 5 litres of alcohol in total is permitted in retail packaging.  However, in-flight consumption of your own alcohol is not permitted.

Note: If your carry-on baggage is greater than this allowance and you try to bring it onboard, you will be advised at the gate that the bag is too large for the cabin and it will need to be treated as checked baggage. In this case the following process will apply:

Virgin Blue domestic flights

Your bag will be tagged at the gate, processed accordingly and checked in the hold, and on arrival, it will be available for collection at the Baggage Blues counter. Here you will be charged a $20 fee for up to 23kg (if you are travelling on a Blue saver or GO! Fare), plus any applicable excess baggage charges.

Pacific Blue domestic flights

Your bag will be tagged at the gate and you will be charged a $20 fee for up to 23kg (if you are travelling on a Blue Saver or GO! Fare), plus any applicable excess baggage charges. Your bag will be checked in the hold, and on arrival, it will be available for collection at the baggage carousel.


What’s not allowed

These items are not allowed as carry-on baggage

  • Sharp items (except sharp items in What's Allowed above)
  • Inflated balls (balloons and other inflatable toys are permitted provided they are not inflated).

The only item that can occupy a seat (apart from a Guest of course) is a cello.  To book an extra seat for your cello please call the Guest Contact Centre.

 

Excess Baggage Charges

  • Excess baggage fees are charged at check-in and payment can be made by credit card, cash and EFTPOS
  • Checked baggage amounts of more then 23kg should be split across several bags to prevent injury to our Ground Staff. 
  • We cannot guarantee that excess baggage will be carried.  This is at our sole discretion and is subject to aircraft loads.

Seafood, Meat and Frozen Products

Virgin Blue

We will only accept seafood/meat/frozen products as checked baggage when packed in the following way:

  • Solid plastic/fibreglass eskies or Styrofoam boxes with lids.  Please note - Soft sided cooler bags and cardboard boxes are NOT permitted.
  • Eskies and Styrofoam boxes must be robust, watertight and in good condition
  • Seafood/meat/frozen products must be sealed in watertight plastic bags or sealable containers
  • Wet ice must be packed separately from frozen products in sealed watertight plastic bags or sealable containers. E.g. frozen water bottles
  • Absorbent material must be placed in the base of the box/esky
  • Total weight of each container - including contents - must not exceed 20 kg each

Pacific/Polynesian Blue

We will only accept seafood/meat/frozen products as checked baggage when packed in the following way:
  • The products must be 
    • packaged in a container that is robust, undamaged and does not contain any other items.
    • sealed in watertight plastic bags inside the container with absorbent materials (E.g. - newspaper) placed in the bottom of the container under the bag
  • Total weight of each container - including contents - must not exceed 20kg

Please note:

  • Live seafood (E.g. crayfish and mud crabs) must not be carried as checked baggage.  If you wish to transport live seafood you must contact Freight
  • You must satisfy Customs and Quarantine requirements for the port of entry.  If you do not, the products may be confiscated.

Unaccompanied Baggage

We cannot accept check-in baggage that will not be travelling with you.  Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as Freight
