Safety Suggestions
Special safety measures are taken to ensure that children and infants are safe and comfortable before and during the flight.
Any child less than two years of age, is classed as an Infant, and must be nursed in the arm of a parent or guardian (at least 15 years of age). Any child two or over, is classified as a child, and must occupy a seat on their own ticket.
When checking in with children or infants, please allow 60 minutes for domestic travel, and 2 hours for international travel. Airport staff may request proof of Date of Birth for children and infants. Extracts or copies of birth certificates are acceptable, as are Immunisation books.
Please be aware that Bassinets, and baby car seats cannot be taken on board Virgin Blue flights. Infant restraint belts are available on all aircraft and must be worn by infants on take-off, landing, during turbulence and whenever the seat belt sign is illuminated.
Items to Take for the Flight
What can you bring to make your child’s flight safe, comfortable and most of all FUN!
To give your child(ren) some homely comforts, perhaps consider a few little things to pack in the child’s carry on hand baggage for the flight. Some suggestions are:
- Their favourite toy (this can calm them down and help make them feel at ease during the flight).
- Some pencils and colouring-in books.
- A story book.
- Travel games.
- Activity packs.
- Portable disk or tape player with head phones.
- A set of headphones as we have an in-flight audio system on our flights that include a children’s channel.
- Perhaps a little snack box and drink with their favourite treats inside. However, we do sell food & drinks on board the aircraft.
Any carry on bag should be of a size and weight that is manageable for the youngster. (Our limit is 7kg per person).
Don’t forget about our in-flight menu ‘V-Licious'. Every seat pocket has one, so if you don’t have time to pack any little goodies, then don’t stress as we have it all on board.
Mother/Parent Rooms at the Airport
You will find a Mother/Parents room to accommodate your needs within all of our Airport terminals.
Crying Infants and Children
Children and Infants may require extra care when flying and we want to ensure you are well prepared.
Why Do They Cry At Certain Times?
You may have noticed at times infants and children start to cry and put their hands over their ears during take-off and landing. If they cry and you cannot stop them from crying, please do not be alarmed and feel embarrassed. Crying is a natural way for the child to clear their ears, so let them go!!
How Can I Help Prevent This?
Infants: To help prevent their discomfort, breastfeed or bottle-feed your infant when the aircraft begins its take-off and landing. If bottle-feeding you may need to pack an extra bottle for the flight.
Children & Adults: For older children and for adults, give them something to chew on like jelly sweets, so that they are constantly chewing and swallowing. This can help prevent discomfort.
