Our People
Our team at Virgin Blue are living examples of how personal choice and discovering what makes yourself tick can build a great career. No two career paths in our company are the same and that’s how we like it. But some things are the same - where the individuals work to the best of their ability, know what keeps them interested and challenged, strive for a balance in their work and private life, are solutions focused and embrace teamwork. A career at Virgin Blue is whatever you make of it … let’s face it, it’s all (Virgin) blue sky.
We're delighted to introduce you to some of our team members who are busy charting their course with Virgin Blue.
Adam - Cabin Crew Flight Manager, V Australia
With a background in hospitality and aviation, I joined the Virgin Blue Airlines Group almost four years ago as the Cabin Crew Operational Support Team Leader for Virgin Blue, and six months later I moved into a Business Analyst role in the Cabin Crew department. What initially attracted me to Virgin Blue was company culture. I remember reading the Voyeur magazine on my flight to Brisbane for my initial interview, and reading a comment by Brett Godfrey along the lines of: "Our competitors may be able to copy our routes, fares and destinations but they'll never be able to copy our culture;" and I thought that this was definitely the airline I wanted to work for.
A few months ago, I joined V Australia as a Flight Manager and I love leading a team that strives to make a real difference to our Guests’ day, and to create a unique experience that makes their journey with us special, every time they fly. The variety of work that comes with leading a Crew of 13 on each flight is also great. Whether it’s coaching a new Crew member through their first trip, developing a Crew member on board to prepare for their upcoming promotion, supporting a Crew member who falls ill when overseas or just making sure that even at 3:30am somewhere over the middle of the Pacific Ocean we're still having fun and loving being at work! In fact, there's no better feeling than reading our Guest Comment Cards at the end of each flight and seeing comments such as - "Our best flight ever!" - and knowing that together, we've been able to make the Guest experience something more special than “just another flight.”
Three Virgin Blue values are really important to me – Fun, Safety and Challenge. Fun at work is so important. If our team is having fun and we love what we do, then that experience directly translates to our Guests. While we love to have fun at work, Safety is our number one priority. To be accountable for the safety of more than 350 Guests and 13 Crew in the cabin is a huge responsibility, and I certainly ensure that our on board team always make the safety of both Guests and Crew as a number one priority. As for challenge, I love where the Virgin Blue Airlines Group has taken aviation in Australia. Every day I go to work and I see people fly to the USA on V Australia who just 12 months ago simply couldn't afford to. To know that you're part of an airline that has made it possible for everyone to fly is certainly something very special.
Ann - Guest Contact Centre - Learning Consultant
My career path has been through a number of changes over the years. I started out in the fitness industry after completing Year 12 at school. Whilst working as a fitness instructor, I was given the opportunity to return back to my home country, Papua New Guinea, working in the media industry as a TV Presenter.
A number of years later I returned to Australia to pursue a sporting dream which was to compete at the 2000 Olympic Games. Yes, it was a varied start to my adult life, however the opportunities were exciting and rewarding.
My first encounter with Virgin Blue was in 2000 when I booked a flight for my father to watch me compete in the Sydney Olympic Games. A couple of years after competing, it was time to grow up and get a job. Virgin Blue offered many opportunities at the time and I was drawn to the vibrant innovative culture of this new airline, which was revolutionising the Australian aviation industry.
I was initially employed as a part time agent Guest Contact Centre Agent and I successfully joined the Guest Contact Centre Learning Team a year and a half later. In 2009, seven and a half years later, I still love my job and working for the Virgin Blue Airlines Group. My role is rewarding and satisfying and I’m grateful to be working with such outstanding people who are committed to the success of this business.
I feel that it is important to “walk the walk” and “talk the talk” by including the six Virgin Blue values in everything we do in our roles. Quality and Caring are two of our Virgin Blue values that really stand out for me. As Guest Contact Centre Learning Consultants, my team provides the highest level of learning and training, which then results in high quality, friendly and fun Guest service.
We provide a caring environment during training and on the job, to ensure that our Agents treat both internal and external Guests with dignity, courtesy and respect. What I love most about the Virgin Blue Airlines Group is that we have a unique culture and pride ourselves in the highest level of customer service, which we provide for our Guests at each and every touch point on their journey. As an employer, Virgin Blue is great because it invests in the growth and development of its most valuable asset – its people, offering them opportunities to reach their potential.
Hanson - Revenue Management - Commercial Graduate
I joined Virgin Blue in 2009 after graduating from an Aviation Management degree at the University of NSW, in the Virgin Blue Graduate Program Commercial Stream. What initially attracted me to Virgin Blue was the company culture and the opportunity for everyone to display their own ‘Virgin Flair’, whereby everyone can inject their own personality into the job. Also opportunities to meet Virgin Founder, Sir Richard Branson are definitely a bonus.
Currently, I’m working in Revenue Management, and in 2010 I will rotate to the E-Commerce team and the Guest Contact Centre to further my learning experience. The variety of tasks and opportunities available within Virgin Blue definitely suits my career goals and I really like the fact that employees are highly valued within the business.
Like a jigsaw puzzle, every person and every department is crucial in the smooth operation of the airline group. What I love most about my job is being able to make a difference to the company, and the markets I help manage within Revenue Management.
Also, through various rotations and placements, the Graduate program will further enable me to interact with different teams across the business and foster valuable relationships. The ‘can-do’ attitude of everyone employed within Virgin Blue always inspires me.
Linda – Personal Assistant to the General Manager of Velocity
Strangely enough my working life started as a horticultural apprentice and I continued in that trade for thirteen years, both in Victoria and in Queensland. I advanced from the field into the office of the company I was working for, starting as a Divisional Manager, then Administration Manager and then Systems Administrator. At each change in my career, I took the opportunity to further my training, completing both a Certificate IV in Business Administration, and Certificate III in Information Technology.
I joined Virgin Blue in July 2007, as a Management Assistant in Guest Service Systems, working for the Service Logistics and Service Delivery departments. This role provided me with a fantastic introduction to the airline industry. I was excited at the opportunity to work for the Virgin Blue Airlines Group, a fun and innovative company that would give me lots of opportunities to learn new things and see new places. I am now the Personal Assistant for the General Manager of Velocity, working with a great Boss and with a great team!!
I think it is great that Virgin Blue encourages everyone to further their careers within other areas of the Virgin Blue Airlines Group, allowing for opportunities to advance within their team or move through different teams and roles across the business. What I love most about my job is the flexibility to manage my own work and the people I work with, everyone here is like family. I also love the fact that Virgin Blue is innovative, challenging, fun and caring and offers me the ability to provide my input. These values also ensure I am a part of a happy, well bonded team.
